My mom only had one eye. I hated her… She was such an embarrassment. She cooked for students and teachers to support the family. There was this one day during elementary school where my mom came to say hello to me. I was so embarrassed.
How could she do this to me? I ignored her, threw her a hateful look and ran out. The next day at school one of my classmates said, ‘EEEE, your mom only has one eye!’ I wanted to bury myself. I also wanted my mom to just disappear. I confronted her that day and said,‘ If you’re only gonna make me a laughing stock, why don’t you just die?’ My mom did not respond… I didn’t even stop to think for a second about what I had said, because I was full of anger. I was oblivious to her feelings.
I wanted out of that house, and have nothing to do with her. So I studied real hard, got a chance to go abroad to study. Then, I got married. I bought a house of my own. I had kids of my own. I was happy with my life, my kids and the comforts. Then one day, my Mother came to visit me. She hadn’t seen me in years and she didn’t even meet her grandchildren. When she stood by the door, my children laughed at her, and I yelled at her for coming over uninvited. I screamed at her, ‘How dare you come to my house and scare my children!’ GET OUT OF HERE! NOW!!!’ And to this, my mother quietly answered, ‘Oh, I’m so sorry. I may have gotten the wrong address,’ and she disappeared out of sight.
One day, a letter regarding a school reunion came to my house. So I lied to my wife that I was going on a business trip. After the reunion, I went to the old shack just out of curiosity. My neighbors said that she died. I did not shed a single tear. They handed me a letter that she had wanted me to have.
‘My dearest son,
I think of you all the time. I’m sorry that I came to your house and scared your children. I was so glad when I heard you were coming for the reunion. But I may not be able to even get out of bed to see you. I’m sorry that I was a constant embarrassment to you when you were growing up. You see……..when you were very little, you got into an accident, and lost your eye. As a mother, I couldn’t stand watching you having to grow up with one eye. So I gave you mine. I was so proud of my son who was seeing a whole new world for me, in my place, with that eye.

เรื่องสั้น…แม่ผู้เสียสละ
แม่ของฉันมีดวงตาเพียงข้างเดียว ฉันรู้สึกเกลียดแม่ยิ่งนัก … แม่ช่างเป็นอะไรที่น่าอับอายขายหน้าสำหรับฉัน แม่มีอาชีพเป็นแม่ครัวทำอาหารให้นักเรียนและครูในโรงเรียนที่ฉันเรียนอยู่
วันหนึ่ง..ในระหว่างที่ฉันเรียนกำลังเรียนอยู่ในชั้นประถม แม่ก็ได้เข้ามาเพื่อที่จะทักทายฉัน..ซึ่งทำให้ฉันรู้สึกอับอายขายหน้ามาก แม่ทำแบบนี้กับฉันได้อย่างไรกัน ฉันเมินแม่ มองแม่ด้วยสายตาจงเกลียดจงชัง และวิ่งหนีออกมา
ในวันต่อมา เพื่อนร่วมชั้นเรียนของฉันคนหนึ่งก็ได้พูดขึ้นว่า “อี้ย์..แม่ของเธอมีตาแค่ข้างเดียว” ฉันอยากที่จะฝังตัวเองให้จมหายไป และฉันก็อยากให้แม่หายตัวไปด้วย ฉันได้ประจันหน้ากับแม่ในวันนั้นและกล่าวกับแม่ว่า ถ้าเพียงแต่แม่อยู่ทำให้ฉันเป็นที่หัวเราะขบขัน ทำไมแม่ไม่ตายไปซะเลยเล่า? แม่ไม่ได้ตอบโต้ว่าอะไร ฉันไม่ได้หยุดคิดสักวินาทีเดียวในสิ่งที่ฉันพูดอะไรกับแม่ เพราะว่าฉันกำลังโกรธจัด ฉันไม่ได้คำนึงถึงความรู้สึกของแม่เลย
ฉันหนีออกจากบ้านนั้นมาและไม่ต้องการที่จะเกี่ยวข้องกับแม่อีก ฉันจึงเล่าเรียนอย่างขยันขันแข็งและมีโอกาสไปเรียนต่อต่างประเทศ หลังจากนั้นฉันก็มีครอบครัว ฉันมีบ้านเป็นของตัวเอง มีลูกๆ ฉันมีความสุขกับชีวิต กับลูกๆ กับสิ่งที่มี แล้ววันหนึ่งแม่ได้มาเยี่ยมฉัน แม่ไม่ได้เห็นฉันมาเป็นเวลาหลายปีและไม่เคยได้พบแม้กระทั่งหลานๆของท่าน เมื่อแม่มายืนอยู่ตรงประตูบ้าน ลูกๆต่างพากันหัวเราะเธอ และฉันก็ได้ตะคอกใส่เธอที่มาโดยไม่ได้รับเชิญ
ฉันแผดเสียงใส่แม่ว่า “แม่ถือดียังไงที่มาบ้านของฉันและยังทำให้ลูกๆของฉันตกใจกลัวอีก” ออกไป! เดี๋ยวนี้! แม่ตอบกลับเบาๆว่า “โอ้ ฉันขอโทษ ฉันคงมาผิดบ้าน” และแม่ก็เดินหายจากไปจนลับตา
อยู่มาวันหนึ่ง ได้มีจดหมายเกี่ยวกับงานคืนสู่เหย้าของโรงเรียนมาที่บ้านด้วยต้องการกลับไปที่นั่น ฉันจึงโกหกภรรยาว่าเดินทางไปทำธุระกิจ เสร็จจากงานพบปะฉันได้ไปยังกระท่อมหลังเก่าที่ฉันจากมาด้วยความอยากรู้อยากเห็นเพื่อนบ้านบอกว่าแม่ได้เสียชีวิตลงแล้วฉันไม่ได้เสียน้ำตาให้กับการตายของแม่เลยพวกเขายื่นจดหมายฉบับหนึ่งที่แม่อยากจะให้แก่ฉัน

แม่คิดถึงลูกตลอดเวลา แม่ขอโทษที่ไปหาลูกและทำให้เด็กๆต้องตกใจกลัว แม่ดีใจมากที่รู้ว่าลูกกำลังจะกลับมาในงานของโรงเรียน แต่แม่คงไม่สามารถแม้ที่จะลุกออกจากเตียงไปพบลูกได้แม่เสียใจที่เป็นเหตุให้ลูกอับอายขายหน้ามาตลอดเวลาที่ลูกโตขึ้น ลูกรู้ไหมว่า…ตอนที่ลูกยังเล็ก ลูกได้ประสบอุบัติเหตุจนสูญเสียดวงตา ในฐานะแม่ย่อมทนดูไม่ได้ที่จะเห็นลูกโตขึ้นมาโดยมีดวงตาแค่ข้างเดียว ดังนั้นแม่จึงยอมให้ดวงตาของแม่แก่ลูกไป สำหรับแม่แล้ว…แม่ภูมิใจมากที่ลูกสามารถมองเห็นโลกใหม่ได้ทั้งหมดด้วยดวงตาดวงนั้น
